MACH

Overview

MACH is a tactical, high-octane, and lethal tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) created by Steel Raven Games, where players play as specialists charged with fighting international threats and completing secret operations.

Description

Welcome to MACH, a tactical high octane lethal TTRPG set in the not so far future. In MACH, you play as the people who get stuff done. Not always clean. Not always fair.  But they get the job done nonetheless.  Facing off against criminals, discovering plots, hacking systems and narrowly escaping means that at all times, danger is real. Stay on your toes, or end up dead. Players are regularly fighting threats out of their level, stuck in deadly scenarios, and one mistake away from being killed. You play as these specialists, people who do things fast, hard and well. Specialties and skills differ per character, with a heavy emphasis on making your character yours.  Are you someone who blows things up? or do you fight your way through hordes of opponents? Either way, the unique aspect makes you different, it makes you better than others. The secrets and closed doors of the world are now wide open. The question is if you dare to go through them.

Key features

Specialist characters

Picking unique abilities , specialties and gear allows every character to be unique and different, not just in flavor, but in gameplay.

High octane action

The system hits hard, and it hits you back just as hard. A consequence track rather than HP means that getting hit in the arm is no longer a "minor issue". Bleeding out, Head trauma, or just being blown up are all equally terrifying. Fight accordingly.

Tag system

Using a custom tag system, MACH is extremely customizable. Tag's govern modifiers, such as a slippery floor being a -2 to any checks involving movement. From making characters, to terrain, to the gear itself, everything is a tag. This (in conjunction with the "Hard 2D6" system) means that the game is constantly high intensity.

Hard 2d6

MACH uses a 2d6 system that has tier based success, with a <6 being a worse situation, a 7-9 being a conditional success, and a >10 being a success. This means that at all times, strategy is key.

Ludonarrative Dissidents

TTRPG
English
Game design
"Ludonarrative dissonance" is a term from game-design commentary, describing a moment when the game mechanics pull in one direction but the game story pulls in another, creating dissonance. The ‘Ludonarrative Dissidents’ are three game designers, reviewers and commentators, veterans in the field of ludic narrative, who have come together to discuss the art, science and craft of RPG design by vivisecting game systems and seeing what makes them run.  Your hosts are Ross Payton, Greg Stolze and James Wallis. Ethos Every episode of Ludonarrative Dissidents is built around four pillars: What does this game do? How does it do that? How do people play it? Why do they play it that way? (and how well does it succeed?) We examine games from all angles: mechanical, ludic, narrativist, historical, cultural, structural, whether or not it’s fun, and Greg complains about its use of the future-conditional tense. We look at its influences and pedigree, its narrative engine, its world-building, its book-design, and James reveals that he dated the designer’s sister, or something like that. In season 2 we have added episodes that look at specific aspects of RPGs, such as initiative systems, metacurrencies and diceless games. Origins The idea behind Ludonarrative Dissidents came from a Twitter discussion in early 2021. Someone was looking for RPG designers to work on a project, someone else suggested Greg and James, and after the two of them politely declined, a third person opined that a podcast with the two talking about games and game design would be quite a thing. Greg and James exchanged a virtual glance across the Atlantic, Greg mentioned the idea to Ross, the three of them filled a Google document with ideas, and the project was born.
