Appendix N Book Club

Overview

Appendix N: Inspirational and Educational Reading is from the back pages of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Master’s Guide and it outlines the authors and works of fiction that the creators of
Dungeons & Dragons https://groupfinder.eu/library/dungeons-dragons-55e-2024
encouraged us to read for inspiration. The Appendix N Book Club is our opportunity to read and discuss these books, imagine how they inspired the original iterations of the game, and to brainstorm how we can use them in our games today.

Dungeons & Dragons

Sanctum is a free, local-first campaign manager built for Dungeons & Dragons 5e Dungeon Masters. It brings every moving part of a campaign , characters and NPCs, a combat tracker, world maps, quests, factions, a story timeline, magic items, handouts and session notes , together in a single fast desktop app that runs entirely offline. There is no account, no cloud and no subscription: a campaign is simply a file on the DM's own machine, and it stays theirs. At the table, Sanctum is built for speed. Its combat tracker handles initiative order, conditions, concentration saves and a live combat log, with one-click import of 140+ SRD monsters. A command palette (Ctrl+K) jumps anywhere instantly, a built-in 5e rules reference is always a click away, and a separate live Player View can be sent to a second monitor or TV to show players exactly what they should see. Characters get full 5e sheets , abilities, skills, spells, currency, hit dice and rests . and DMs can import existing material from Markdown/Obsidian vaults or fillable character-sheet PDFs, then export printable sheets back out.

Rollful

Rollful

Dice roller
Rollful is a hosted dice-rolling API. It rolls dice over HTTP: a request carries a formula, and Rollful parses it, rolls each die through a cryptographically secure generator, and returns every die it rolled rather than only the total. It is not tied to any game system. It knows what 4d6kh3 means and nothing about what the caller uses it for, so it suits a virtual tabletop, a character sheet, a Discord bot, or anything else that needs a roll it can show the working for. The formula grammar covers flat modifiers, advantage and disadvantage, keeping the highest or lowest dice, exploding and penetrating dice, multipliers, several terms in one roll, and tags. The response lists every die with a flag saying which ones counted, so an interface can show the die a keep rule dropped instead of hiding it. A GET request handles a plain formula. POST adds bonuses and tags, and a batch endpoint takes up to 20 rolls in one request. Every response and error has the same documented shape, described by an OpenAPI 3.1 document. There is no account and no API key. Usage is rate limited rather than metered. The homepage carries a form for rolling dice straight from the browser. Rollful is powered by the OpenDice npm package, which is free to use directly in any JavaScript or TypeScript project.
